She gave him her innocence . . .Lady Aline Marsden was brought up for one reason: to make an advantageous marriage to a member of her own class. Instead, she willingly gave her innocence to John McKenna, a servant on her father’s estate. Their passionate transgression was unforgivable — John was sent away, and Aline was left to live in the countryside . . . an exile from London society . . .and he took her love.
Now McKenna has made his fortune, and he has returned — more boldly handsome and more mesmerizing than before. His ruthless plan is to take revenge on the woman who shattered his dreams of love. But the magic between them burns as bright as ever. And now he must decide whether to let vengeance take its toll . . . or risk everything for his first, and only, love.
This book may contain explicit intimate scenes, so if you are not 18+ then I probably wouldn’t recommend it for younger readers.
This is my first time reading anything from Lisa Kleypas an I must admit I am enchanted by her clever writing style and witty dialogs.
“For twelve years I have been in constant torment, wanting you in my arms and believing it would never be possible. I want you for a thousand reasons other than your legs, and…no, damn it, I want you for no reason at all, other than the fact that you’re you. I want to shove myself deep inside you and stay for hours…days…weeks. I want morning and noon and nightfall with you. I want your tears, your smiles, your kisses…the smell of your hair, the taste of your skin, the touch of your breath on my face. I want to see you in the final hour of my life…to lie in your arms as I take my last breath.”
I really enjoyed McKenna and Gideon – they were my favorites. I guess you can add meddlesome Marcus to the list too.
“I’m supposed to stay away from you.” He grinned at that. “Says who?” She ignored the question. “And while I’m certain that at least half the rumors about you couldn’t possibly be true—” “They are,” Gideon said without a trace of shame. “You’re a rake, then.” “The worst kind.”
This book made me giggle and ahhh from beginning to end especially when Gideon was in the process of ravishing Livia and stops in the midst to get an ice cube – my first thought was what hell is he doing, that drunken louse is stopping to get a drink (he loves his liquor mind you) but oh no, what he does with that piece of ice made me go ‘ohh damn!’.
“Aline,” he whispered, “Do you know what hell is?” “Yes.” Her eyes overflowed. “Trying to exist with your heart living somewhere outside your body.” “No. It’s knowing that you have so little faith in my love, you would have condemned me to a lifetime of agony.” His face contorted suddenly. “To something worse than death.”
“No miles of level desert, no jagged mountain heights, no sea of endless blue. Neither words nor tears, nor silent fears will keep me from coming back to you.”
I cannot wait to read more from Lisa.
